Short Assignment #3
Audience in my own terms is who the passage is directed towards or who it is about. Sometimes the author states it directly, or other times we have to use context clues to figure it out. Audience is important to writing because it helps the writer direct their reading towards someone. It also can set an interest or purpose for writing. Livingstones audience was very clear and he even stated it in his speech. His audience was the class of 2016 and teachers and faculty. One line that he specifically stated it was directed for the class of 2016 was “Class of 2016, this is your address” (54 sec). In his speech he directly addressed his audience. Anzaldua takes a different approach and makes it indirect. Her audience is Chicano readers. We can figure this out because she references them multiple times throughout the text. “Chicano Spanish sprang out of the Chicanos' need to identify ourselves as a distinct people” (Anzaldua 36). After identifying both the audiences and reading it through the eyes of the audience my definition does not change.
