Major Assignment #4
Draft #1
Before ENG 101 I did not really have a huge theory on what theory of writing is. I more or less thought of writing as just a bunch of ideas put together to create a piece of narrative to read. I did understand the purpose, audience and genre and that they were tied into the writing, but i did not understand how much value they provided in writing. I definitely had a positive transfer, which means “Positive transfer occurs when prior learning assists new learning”. Over the past 14 weeks i have developed multiple short writing prompts and even 3 large essay prompts, all of them using these 3 key terms. I have expanded my knowledge on how writers use all of these to create good pieces of narrative, and how I can use them to better my writing myself.
I would say that my writing has evolved a lot with each piece of writing I have created because I can see the level of growth. When we first started our major assignment #1, my writing was fairly decent, but i struggled with the 3 key terms we learned about. I had a hard time with finding the audience and creating a narrative that fit the proper audience. I also struggled with the purpose of the writing, but the genre was pretty easy to create. This significantly changed in major assignment #2 and #3 due to one key factor, we got to pick the topics to write about. Allowing the topic to be about anything we want was a huge advantage to me. When it comes to writing, it is not my strongest or most enjoyable thing to do, but when I get to write about something that I am passionate about, it really brought to my mind how easy writing can be. Reaching my audience and gathering a purpose was extremely easy, and even the genre was extremely easy to do.
My theory of writing now is a lot better than it was 14 weeks ago when we started this class. My theory of writing now is I understand the value and importance of writing and the three major key terms, audience purpose and genre, and I understand how they all tie together to make a piece of writing impactful and worth the time. My theory of writing is that writing is used to allow the writer to gather his thoughts and portray them to a specific audience and allow them to be portrayed how they want it to be.
The way I would be able to use my theory of writing in the future would be to apply it to all my writing. I would have all my writings, if possible, be about topics I enjoy or if not find a way to incorporate something I like in the piece to unlock my full potential. The best way I would describe what I've learned in this class would be to explain that I found the best way for me to get my thoughts out. I have clearly done better in this class, in short and major assignments, when they entitle choosing a topic. It is a lot easier to find the audience and purpose and it allows me to write the best work I can create.
Before I started this class my theory of writing was very broad and I didn't really have the biggest theory on my writing. I knew that genre and audience were huge parts in creating my pieces, but this class showed me the true importance of them. In this class, from my major assignments to my short, I have seen large improvement. The improvement came from choosing my own topic and it allowed me to express my true side of writing. This is my theory of writing after my ENG 101 class.
