In the commencement speeches presented by Martin Luther King Jr, Donovan Livingston and Gloria Anzaldua all take a different approach to literature. The main aspects of literature they use are genre, audience and purpose to convey their writing. They used their genre to categorize their writing by categories and similarities. The audience was who the passage was directed at and who the writing would mostly affect. The purpose was the meaning behind the speech and it's why the author wrote the piece. Martin Luther King Jr was one of the most influencing people during his time period. When he was in jail, he wrote a letter to clergymen and used lots of emotion and ethical appeals in his writing. This is how he used the term genre in his writing because he knew what was going on in his time period and he used his power of writing to affect people. He believed color was nothing more than the pigment of skin. His genre also ties into his audience because Martin Luther King Jr was trying to bring passion into his audience, people of color, and show them that they are being treated wrong and change needs to happen. “We were in,mindful of the difficulties involved” (MLK 3). He states in this quote that even he himself was unaware of the treatment at first but now he is educating everyone on it. His purpose was to educate his audience on what was happening in the world at the time. He was trying to explain the horrible treatment they were getting and educate them on how they need a change. Donovan had a speech that was so well put together and it was presented perfectly. His speech was about never giving up and never letting anyone hold you back. That was his genre of his speech. While many writers don’t do this Donovan came out and stated his audience directly, being the class of 2016 he was presenting to, even though we could have easily found this out. Donovan has a very uplifting purpose as he is telling every person there to lift themselves to their potential. “Those days are done. I belong among the stars and so do you” (Donovan 4:49). He uses really good metaphors about how people say the sky's the limit but he says that we need to inspire galaxies of greatness and he says everyone belongs in the stars so shoot past the sky. His purpose was extremely well put together and inspired many people. Gloria Anzaldua had a very similar speech to Martin Luther King Jr. Her genre was along the same lines of how people similar to her are oppressed, so they both had the oppression genre. Her audience differed though as her audience was more directed towards the Chicano Spanish people and their struggle with fitting in with the American people. “‘If you want to be American, speak American’”(Gloria Anzaldua 34). This quote really helps define the audience and really shows the type of struggles they were going through. The purpose of her writing this piece of writing was to tell them of their oppression and make a realization with them. There is also a slight hint that the purpose could also be directed to Americans to show them the perspective of the. Spanish people. Martin Luther King Jr, Donovan and Gloria Anzaldua all used the three terms of writing, genre, audience and purpose in their writings. They all had a genre that was specific to their piece that helped them create similarities in other writing. They all had a specific audience that the piece was intended for. They all had a purpose to write their piece so it had a meaning behind it. The way they all used these writing tactics was unique but they all used them in a way that created an impact.
